At the Entrance

The entrance of a house is called “genkan.”

Invited to a house in foreign countries, I really hesitate to enter a house with my shoes on.Because we generally take off our shoes at the entrance of a house in Japan. Some inns and hotels, some restaurants and bar, which are often in the Japanese style, requires you to take off your shoes.

Oldham blueberry and Amaranthus caudatus

When you visit a Japanese friend’s house, take off your shoes on an earthen floor in the house.  An apartment house tends to  have a little difference in floor heights. So, please be careful.(^^)

Flower decoration at the entrance or on the “tokonoma” is called “mukae-bana” means welcome flower.

Osier, Anemone hupehensis, Chrysanthemum

Standard Japanese houses are compact, but most of them have space to give both owners and visitors a good time.

People don’t care about paws of their cats if they give the same effect as shoes to the floor of their houses…
